Appearances & Media

Over 20 years of experience in education and public communication

Joe Storlien is a soil scientist, teacher, mentor, and passionate advocate for encouraging everyone to share in the benefits and joys of gardening. Nature’s beauty and depth have always held his fascination as a scientist. His lively, educational workshops teach gardeners to first build a solid foundation and then embrace the colorful details that elevate gardening into more than a pastime—into a lifestyle. From the joy of cultivating your own food to the creation of thriving ecological gardens that uplift both home and community, Joe is passionate about using his knowledge to inspire and support others.

Each year, Joe shares his expertise with a variety of groups, speaking on topics that resonate with diverse audiences. He can be found about once a month on WJON radio’s Garden Corner show and was featured on PBS’s Praire Yard and Garden for an episode dedicated to soil health.

Joe is currently an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies at The College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University. When he isn’t in the classroom cultivating young minds, he enjoys sharing his passion for education by helping people of all ages as they grow and refine their gardening skills.
